Apart from the Saints declared by the Church, please remember, no one can know how many souls are in Heaven, Purgatory, or Hell. Our objective is simply to ensure that at least one prayer of St. Gertrude is said for every 1000 souls ever created thereby ensuring that Purgatory is indeed emptied based on God's promise to St. Gertrude.

Birth Rate: This is taken from the Population Reference Bureau and will be updated on December 31 every year.
Souls Who Have Ever Lived: There are many different estimates of how many people have ever lived. We have chosen the work done by Carl Haub as our reference point. This 108 billion figure starts at 50,000 B.C., (a little too early for our liking) but excludes the many millions of souls lost to the sin of abortion. On the basis of rather praying too many prayers than too few, we feel this is a reasonable estimate.
Calculation and Updating: We try to update the status as often as possible, but definitely once a week. At each update, the new births since last update are divided by 1000, (rounded up to the nearest whole number), and added to the total prayers still needed. The prayers pledged since the last update are then subtracted to arrive at the new total prayers still needed. These are also added to the prayers already completed.

Our Lord told St. Gertrude that every time this prayer is said, He will release 1000 Souls from Purgatory.
